About

The Tidewater chapter of Breastfeeding USA (BF USA) was established in April 2017 by founding accredited Breastfeeding Counselor, Amanda Hockensmith. Immediately upon creation, we opened up shop via email, on Facebook, Twitter, and now Instagram to offer quick outlets for mothers and families to connect for fast and reliable nursing support. Today, Amanda continues these ventures while teaching science at a local middle school and as a mother to two boys (ages 1 and 3) and a wife to a firefighter.

As of August 2018, the Tidewater Chapter welcomes our second accredited BC, Katie Brooks. Katie is a full-time working mom who has a 4-year old daughter, a 2-year old son, and a supportive husband of 7 years. In Katie's words,

"I wanted to become a Breastfeeding Counselor to help other moms feel empowered with their decision to breastfeed through all obstacles that are thrown at them. I didn’t have much outside support during my journey so I wanted to be that support to others to maybe help make the journey a little less stressful. I hope that as a Breastfeeding Counselor I can help breakdown the stigma of asking for help. It is something I am working at daily and want other moms to feel they can reach out for help and that it is ok. I chose to be a part of Breastfeeding USA because I love the sense of community and I hope to create that with Tidewater Moms. I look forward to being that listening ear we all need throughout our breastfeeding journey!"

Breastfeeding USA strives to present evidence-based information to mothers so that they can make truly informed decisions related to birth, babyhood, and beyond. We believe that the foundation of these decisions can be rationally based on the biological norm for human mothers and babies.
